OpenAI has confirmed that ChatGPT has surpassed 200 million daily active users — double the figure reported just one year ago and a milestone that cements the AI assistant’s position as one of the fastest-growing consumer technology products in history. The announcement came during OpenAI’s annual developer conference alongside a series of new product features and API improvements.

Growth Trajectory

ChatGPT reached 1 million users in its first five days after launch in November 2022. It hit 100 million monthly active users in January 2023, becoming the fastest-growing consumer app ever at the time. The jump from 100 million to 200 million daily active users — not monthly, but daily — represents a qualitative shift from novelty to habit. For context, Instagram took approximately six years to reach 200 million monthly users.

Who’s Using It

OpenAI’s internal research shows the user base has diversified dramatically from its early adopter phase. Today, the platform’s largest demographic segments are students (23%), business professionals (28%), software developers (19%), and creative professionals including writers, designers, and marketers (18%). International users now represent 65% of total usage, with particularly strong growth in India, Brazil, Japan, and Southeast Asia.

Enterprise Momentum

ChatGPT Enterprise — the company’s product for large organizations — now has over 600,000 business customers, with average contract sizes growing as companies expand their deployments from individual teams to company-wide rollouts. OpenAI says the enterprise business is now growing faster than the consumer segment, driven by integrations with workplace tools and proprietary data through the API.

Competition Isn’t Slowing Growth

Despite intense competition from Google Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude, and Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT has maintained its lead through a combination of brand recognition, product iteration speed, and distribution advantages. “ChatGPT has become a verb in a way that no other AI product has,” said one analyst at Bernstein. “That’s an almost impossible moat to overcome with a competing product, regardless of how good it is.”

Revenue Implications

OpenAI does not disclose revenue, but analysts estimate the company’s annualized revenue run rate has crossed $3.4 billion, up from approximately $1.6 billion a year ago. A portion comes from ChatGPT subscriptions ($20/month for Plus, $25/month for Team), but the faster-growing revenue stream is API access, which is now used by over 2 million developers and hundreds of thousands of businesses.
